While I’ve learned a lot about breaking out of my shell with my acting class, I could also say the same thing about… Improv class!! I’ve taken two so far (one a Second City and one at Impatient Theatre Co.) and they’ve both been a blast!
Why take an improv class:
- You will laugh!
- It’s a lot of fun!
- You’ll learn to interact with others in crazier ways than you would in real life — this is GREAT practice for your video
- You learn to loosen up and just go for it! This is the type of attitude more of us need to have, I think. Also: I’ve learned in improv class that you need to be willing to let go and look stupid. If you actually care about looking stupid, you’ll be the uncool one in class – but if you’re shy, no worries, the class will understand that it’ll take you some timetime, which leads me to…
- You’re in a supportive environment. Improv is scary. Trying to be funny is scary. Why not be terrified with a bunch of other people? You’ll connect/bond with others in a unique way.
- You will surprise yourself and you’ll feel better about yourself. Boost in confidence = boost in confidence on-camera when you’re doing your online video.
- It helps you with other areas in life. You learn to be a better listener, you learn to adapt and be quick on your feet, etc.
If you’re not quite ready to take an improv class, why not try voice lessons or go to Karaoke Night and sign yourself up to sing a song or two. Try to do an activity that you normally wouldn’t do because it rattles your nerves. Once you take the leap and go for it, you’ll learn that it wasn’t so bad and that you made it out alive and in one piece (hopefully).
